Books on my Shelf: Vaca Reads

I was on vacation in Aruba last week (the best!) and I was so happy to have so much time to read. Reading is one of my favorite things ever, especially on vacation.

I got to read so many great books and have some awesome recommendations for your summer reading list!

Here is exactly what I read, what I thought, in the order that I read them:

This was a great mystery and suspense read. I’ve read a ton of Lisa Scottoline books and loved them all. This one was different from her crime and mystery books because instead of being about a lawyer, it focuses on a judge. This took barely any time to really get into the story and was all around worth reading. Very suspenseful!

Sophie Kinsella’s books are always so funny. She has such an easy way of writing and telling a story that I can never put her books down. I loved the characters in this book and the story that developed around them. This book was a little bit predictable – but in a good way. You love what you know is going to happen next and can’t stop reading to ensure that it does. It’s that kind of story.

Wow. I loved this book. I was a little bit weary of it because it didn’t get amazing reviews on Good Reads. It was reviewed to be more…average. But, I think those reviews were oh-so-wrong. I loved this story and seriously could not put it down! I loved escaping to the Nantucket island where this book took place and getting lost in the minds of the characters. I really loved how it was set in all of their voices rather than just one characters. Definitely a fast paced book and a perfect summer read.

Nicholas Sparks always writes a good story and this is no exception. I will but a warning that this is an emotional read. It definitely had me going. I don’t want to give up too much – but have tissues nearby! Totally worth reading.

At first I was really skeptical about this book. The story line of it seemed really weird. But, I have to say it turned out to be an amazing tale. It was even educational and eye-opening. I loved the way the female took on a different and unique role in the novel and thought all of the characters and problems surrounding them were developed really well. This book did a great way of dealing with a real-world issue (that doesn’t get nearly enough attention) in a touching fictional light. I can’t wait to read more Kristin Hannah books!

Books on my Shelf: The Rescue

Last week I read The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks.

This is one of his older books that I had never read. I read it because my mom gave it to me, and the little synopsis on the back sounded pretty good. Almost always I seem to love his books, so I figured, why not?

It turned out that it was a really great read. I couldn’t put it down! The characters were so easy to get attached to and the situation was so cute but also something that I felt could actually happen. Sometimes in his books, I feel as though the love life situations are very fictionalized, to the point of almost being unrealistic. But in this book, they were certainly more within reach and believable.

There was also a large sense of tragedy in the book that made me gravitate towards it. It was interesting and compelling and even suspenseful at times.

I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a good love story and something light to read. You will definitely enjoy the story and at the end have a warmed heart.

  4. Music – I love these little Lilly Pulitzer speakers that you can plug right into your iPhone to play some relaxing tunes!
  5. A good read – the bath is the perfect time for some light reading that you’re sure to enjoy! Nicholas Sparks books are perfect for the occasion!

What do you need for a relaxing bath?

Grandma Approved Movies

I’ve been with my grandma this week and I love spending time with her. She is so sweet and fun. One really fun thing to do with her (besides shopping and getting our nails done) is to watch movies.

There are tons of rally cute movies to watch with your grandma. There are also others that you probably wouldn’t want to watch with her because it would be, well…awkward. My sister went and saw one of the Sex and the City movies with my grandma and I think she felt uncomfortable. Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t be watching something like Bridesmaids or The Hangover with my Grandma.

Anyways, here are some really cute, good grandma approved movies!:

  1. Sixteen Candles – This is a classic 80’s movie and such a good one! You and your grandma will both enjoy it for sure!
  2. Yours, Mine, & Ours – I love this movie! Something really fun to do with this one is watch the original version and then the newer one and see which you like better! I happen to like the original much better.
  3. Father of the Bride (both parts!) – this is another great family film that I can never get tired of!
  4. Princess Diaries (1 and 2) – a Disney film about a real life princess?! That has grandma-granddaughter written all over it! This film does feature a girl and her grandma, after all.
  5. The Game Plan – this movie is completely adorable and I could watch it again and again – and I don’t say that about many movies, believe me.
  6. Dear John (and all the Nicholas Sparks movies) – these are great movies because they’re so cute and also really appropriate while still centering around love. I saw Dear John in theaters with my grandma and we both loved it!
  7. Enchanted – this is my favorite movie ever and the most adorable fairy tale story about love that literally comes to life!

Get your popcorn and candy and enjoy a good feel-good film with your grandma whenever you can. You’ll have fun and make memories.

Books on my Shelf: Love Stories

Since it’s still Valentine’s Day week (even though the holiday technically passed!) I thought it’d be fun to write about some of my favorite love novels. These portray the best love stories that I just couldn’t put down.

Here they are:

  1. Nicholas Sparks books, particularly The Best of Me, Dear John, and The Choice – sorry for being so cliche but I really love these books. I get so obsessed with them! Sparks has an amazing way of writing a love story that makes any girl swoon. These are a great book to read over and over again and the movies that go along with them are also great (but not nearly as good as the books!). I also can’t wait to see the movie Safe Haven. And as one side note…check out this awesome Levo League article about how to write like Nicholas Sparks. Love that!
  2. The Last Summer of You and Me by Ann Brashares – this is an amazing love story with so many complexities. It truly tells a great story that is sure to keep you guessing!
  3. Sarah Dessen books, particularly Along for the Ride, Just Listen, and Lock and Key – These are some of the best books that I have ever read and will always be my favorites. They all center around love and relationships and have well developed characters you can’t help but love. I haven’t read the latest one yet, but can’t wait to over spring break!
  4. The Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin – I’ve blogged about this book before, because it is one of my most recent favorites. This is a fantastic love story with so many twists and turns that you’ll be dying to know what happens next. I can’t wait to read the rest of Giffin’s books in the hopes of them being just as amazing as this one.
  5. The Man of My Dreams by Curtis Stittenfeld – this is definitely a different love story. It’s totally unique. I thought it was really great though and really interesting to read. Definitely something new when you are looking of an unconventional love story.

What are your favorite love stories? Any good recommendations?
